Crypto — like any speculative asset — experienced its fair share of volatility this year. After plummeting to lows of $16,000 following the collapse of FTX in November 2022, bitcoin surpassed $43,000 in December 2023 as part of a rally that some say is just beginning.

But my hope is that crypto’s persistent reputation for volatility doesn’t tarnish the perceived value of blockchain’s underlying technology.

As we go into 2024, I’m optimistic that the inherent capabilities of distributed ledger technology will extend beyond mere market action. Assessing blockchain’s worth solely through the lens of profit performance overlooks the broader utility and transformative…

Which way Western Man?

“Equality… belongs essentially to decline: the chasm between man and man, class and class, the multiplicity of types, the will to be one’s self, and to distinguish one’s self out — that which I call pathos of distance — characterizes every strong age.”

– Nietzsche, Twilight of the Idols

It’s often thought the grand struggle of the modern world is between right and left, Republican and Democrat, or liberal against conservative. Libertarians take a more nuanced view. Like them,…

Hashdex | Bitcoin ETF Ad Campaign

In the race for the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) nod on Spot Bitcoin Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs), a marketing war has erupted among asset managers vying for approval. With anticipation high, the SEC’s delay has set the stage for potential approvals, amplifying the spotlight on these digital asset products.

In recent weeks, asset management firms Hashdex and Bitwise have intensified their promotional efforts through engaging ad campaigns. Hashdex’s advertisement, reminiscent of the skepticism around emerging technologies in the 1980s, cleverly draws parallels between the initial doubts surrounding home computers and the current sentiment towards…

Several bitcoin ETF hopefuls join BlackRock in naming Jane Street, JPMorgan Securities as authorized participants

Fidelity, Invesco, Valkyrie and WisdomTree joined BlackRock Friday in naming authorized participants for their proposed bitcoin ETFs.

Some other competitors in the race to launch such funds have not yet done so.

Authorized participants, or APs, are entities that create and redeem shares of an ETF. Typically, shares can then be exchanged for a similar basket of securities reflecting the holdings of the ETF, or for cash.

Fidelity named Jane Street and JPMorgan Securities as its APs — matching BlackRock’s choices made earlier in the day.

Valkyrie tapped Jane Street and Cantor Fitzgerald as its authorized participants, while WisdomTree also named Jane Street to serve that…

BlackRock names Jane Street, JPMorgan as authorized participants for its proposed bitcoin ETF

BlackRock disclosed significant new information Friday as part of its proposed spot bitcoin ETF: the identities of its intended authorized participants.

BlackRock plans to tap JPMorgan Securities and Jane Street as authorized participants, a Friday filing notes, should the Securities and Exchange Commission grant approval for their proposed fund.

Authorized participants, or APs, are entities allowed to create and redeem shares of an ETF. These organizations can either exchange ETF shares for a corresponding basket of securities that reflects the ETF’s holdings, or exchange them for cash.

ETF watchers like Bloomberg Intelligence analysts James Seyffart and Eric Balchunas have been…

Even if America gets its bitcoin ETF,  success isn’t guaranteed

A casual look at crypto headlines might suggest that a spot bitcoin ETF in the US is a foregone conclusion, and a positive one at that.

Take the recent news that asset management giant BlackRock is hewing close to the Securities and Exchange Commission’s preferred model for creation and redemption. This suggests that BlackRock is keen to grease the runway as much as possible to capitalize on what Larry Fink called “pent-up interest” in a bitcoin ETF.

This month also saw Bitwise drop a buzzy new ad featuring the world’s most interesting alcohol spokesperson, Jonathan Goldsmith. The ad’s importance was less to do with its alignment to a popular advertising meme, and more to do…
