Some Mt. Gox creditors says they’ve received repayments via PayPal

Nearly a decade after Mt. Gox’s dramatic collapse, some of the defunct crypto exchange’s customers claim they have received their long-awaited repayments.

Posts to the Mt. Gox creditor subreddit, as well as posts in a dedicated Telegram channel, indicate that certain payments have indeed gone out — in the form of the Japanese yen, to creditors who appear to have chosen to receive such payments via PayPal.

“I got money!!” one user wrote on Reddit. “Got our PayPal!! Woohoo!” wrote another.

Yet the process appears to have run into some early trouble. Posts on Reddit indicate that a few creditors received double payments via PayPal. One user posted an email they said was from…

Solana DEXes book record volumes following airdrops

As Solana continues its price run, activity is picking up on the network’s DeFi protocols.

Liquidity on Solana’s largest decentralized exchanges has grown tenfold since October 17, according to a Dune Analytics dashboard. DeFiLlama data shows December DEX volume on Solana beating the previous monthly high, set in November, by almost triple. The volume growth came on the heels of two large airdrops in Solana DeFi, while a third airdrop looms.

Since DeFi caught on in force during 2021, Solana’s decentralized exchanges (DEXes) booked marginal volumes in comparison to DeFi’s main hub, Ethereum. The discrepancy worsened after Solana backer Sam Bankman-Fried was outed for fraud in…

A look at crypto ETF milestones in 2023 — and where spot bitcoin funds stand

Several crypto ETF firsts in 2023 have perhaps been overshadowed by the unresolved spot bitcoin ETF saga.

Volatility Shares launched the first leveraged bitcoin futures ETF in the United States. The US Securities and Exchange Commission also gave ether futures funds the green light — two years to the month after the first BTC futures ETFs hit the market.

While Volatility Shares’ 2x Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITX) has grown to roughly $170 million in assets, the initial interest in ether futures ETFs has left many underwhelmed.

The six ether futures ETFs that launched on Oct. 2 had combined assets under management of about $34 million, as of Dec. 20. The Valkyrie Bitcoin and Ether…

LATEST: Unleashing Cardano’s Smart Revolution: Over 10,000 Smart Contracts Surged in 2023

In a dazzling display of technological prowess, Cardano (ADA) has witnessed a meteoric rise, boasting nearly 10,000 smart contracts integrated into its network in 2023. The Plutus smart contracts platform, the linchpin of this surge, now proudly hosts 14,302 smart contracts, a staggering 200% leap from the 4,731 contracts at the year’s dawn. This feat positions Cardano as a formidable contender against titans like Ethereum.

Fueling this surge is Cardano’s relentless commitment to innovation. The Plutus team’s relentless pursuit of perfection led to significant enhancements in script costs and sizes. Simultaneously, the Hydra scaling team fortified the network’s resilience with version 0.14.0. The network’s statistics tell a story of triumph: 80 million transactions, 9.17 million native tokens, and a vibrant ecosystem with 1,300 projects in development, 153 already launched.

Cardano’s staggering 134% price surge over the year propels it into the top echelons of cryptocurrencies, outshining 65% of its peers. The stage is set for Cardano to redefine the smart contract landscape, heralding a new era of innovation and growth.

What to expect for Web3 in 2024

Reflecting on 2023

At the end of 2022, we made 12 predictions, spanning the areas of gaming, NFTs and digital goods, and Ethereum and blockchain infrastructure.

By our own assessment, we were (mostly) right — with seven correct calls, two misses and three partially right/partially wrong. We were right in our predictions around OpenSea market share, Polygon NFTs, off-exchange custody, deflationary ETH, decreasing hacks, continued regulatory uncertainty and Apple’s pesky 30% tax (which is looking increasingly fragile post Epic Games’ big win over Google on Dec. 11, 2023).

Our biggest miss was volume and revenue associated with brand NFTs. While optional royalties and bear market…

Barry Silbert, Mark Murphy to exit Grayscale board

Digital Currency Group CEO Barry Silbert has resigned as Grayscale’s chairman, according to a Tuesday filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

DCG President Mark Murphy will also be leaving the board. Both resignations are effective Jan. 1, 2024.

DCG Chief Financial Officer Mark Shifke will replace Silbert as Chairman, the filing noted. Senior vice president of operations at DCG Matt Kummell, and Edward McGee, who serves on the audit committee, will also be joining the board.

The departures come as DCG, Grayscale’s parent company, battles a lawsuit brought on by New York Attorney General Letitia James earlier this year. James’ office alleges DCG and its…

Crypto Project Sues Chainalysis

The new year seems set to start tumultuous for Chainalysis. In addition to the trial for Roman Sterlingov set to begin on February 12th, which questions the reliability of Chainalysis Reactor in a multi-million dollar money laundering allegation, Chainalysis is now getting sued by the crypto project YieldNodes.

In their 2023 Crypto Crime Report, Chainalysis alleged that YieldNodes, a Hong Kong based project which rents out computing power to participate in a masternode pool, is a scam. In their crypto scam activity summarized graph, Chainalysis depicted YieldNodes as the second largest crypto scam in revenue of 2022 with a total of $341.6M. Notably, Chainalysis’ graph fails to have…

The year’s most significant crypto M&A deals — and how 2024 might shape up

Though crypto mergers and acquisitions slowed in 2023, some industry watchers say such transactions are likely to be more en vogue next year as the space continues to mature.

There were 203 crypto M&A deals in 2022. Such deal count this year stood at 143 on Dec. 13, according to advisory firm Architect Partners — on pace to decline by 27% year over year.

Nearly a third of the 2023 transactions — 42 in all — have come within the investing and trading infrastructure category, the data shows. This comprises non-exchange trading firms, custodians and other companies focused on “infrastructure to the trading lifecycle,” said Architect Partners founder Eric Risley.

Which deals… Read more on Blockworks
