LATEST: Burkett Financial Services Invests in Bitcoin Through ETFs

South Carolina’s Burkett Financial Services has made a strategic leap into cryptocurrency, revealing substantial investments in Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) on April 1. The financial planning firm has diversified its portfolio by acquiring 602 shares of BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), a spot Bitcoin ETF, valued at $24,363. Additionally, Burkett has invested in the Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO) by ProShares, holding 630 shares with a total value of $20,344. These investments signify a pioneering step for Burkett, marking its entry into the digital currency space through ETFs.

Despite the focus on cryptocurrencies, these holdings represent a minor fraction of Burkett’s vast $194 million investment portfolio, which predominantly includes traditional ETFs and major stocks like Microsoft and Apple. This move positions Burkett as the first traditional financial institution to embrace Bitcoin indirectly through ETF investments, showcasing a blend of innovation and caution in navigating the volatile crypto market.

There’s a lot of expectation that 2024 will be a boom year for Web3.

But while this might be true as far as the markets are concerned, it doesn’t mean much if the average user can’t inclusively participate.

We’re holding up our own growth by overlooking a huge bottleneck — wallets.

Everyone can agree that wallets are simply not good enough.

But what if, for a moment, we were to take a step away from the technical barriers of wallets and think about the associations of the term “wallet?” The whole crypto industry already has a reputation for being a bit of a boys’ club, so is the use of the name “wallet” helping the cause?

LATEST: Vitalik Buterin Maps Out Next Stage for Ethereum Growth

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has announced a major update dubbed “The Purge,” aimed at simplifying and securing the Ethereum network. This initiative is marked by the introduction of EIP-6780 during the Dencun hard fork, focusing on improving the protocol by modifying the SELFDESTRUCT function to boost efficiency and security. The update is a key step in removing unnecessary complexities, enhancing the system’s performance, and strengthening its defense mechanisms against potential threats. By streamlining operations and cutting down on excess storage needs, Ethereum is setting the stage for more robust and efficient network functionality.

Bitcoin’s Impressive Monthly Returns Mark a Bullish Quarter

Bitcoin’s monthly returns tell a story of dramatic growth and dynamic market changes. In January 2024, the return was a modest +0.87%, but by February, a substantial leap to +44% was recorded. March saw a significant +15.5% return, rounding off an impressive first quarter at +67.6%.

The standout moments for Bitcoin in March included breaking its all-time record, reaching over $73,000, and substantial institutional moves like MicroStrategy’s purchase of an additional $500 million in Bitcoin. Moreover, the entry of BlackRock’s Bitcoin ETF, which accumulated 250K BTC, pushing its assets under management beyond $10 billion, signifies growing institutional endorsement.

Looking at the historical data from 2017, the journey shows Bitcoin’s ability to recover from negative returns, such as -16.7% in January 2022, to robust peaks like the +39.9% in November 2021. This volatility highlights Bitcoin’s unpredictable nature, attracting both caution and opportunity for investors.

Bitcoin miner Hut 8 doubles down on diversification, discipline around halving

Hut 8 looks to deploy its large stack of bitcoin holdings with “discipline” heading into the bitcoin halving while further diversifying its revenue streams, the company’s chief executive said.

The company, which completed a merger of equals with US Bitcoin Corp last year, tallied $60.6 million in revenue during the second half of 2023. Net income was $6.2 million over that span.

Nearly 70% of that revenue comes from crypto mining, CEO Asher Genoot said during the company’s earnings call Thursday.

But Hut 8 seeks to further diversify its revenue streams across its managed services business, the CEO noted — as well as boost its standing in the high-performance computing (HPC)…
