There’s no reason to fear open platforms

Innovation is more often than not borne out of unmet needs. Creative thinkers and problem solvers see the gaps in their communities and ask how they can solve them.

In a recent op-ed, three African presidents highlighted just how important it is for these types of solutions to be found within. It’s the key to sustainable, long-term growth and development. Who knows better what’s not working than the ones experiencing it every day?

But that’s also where open technology and systems like blockchain can equip innovators with the tools to meet those needs.

Unfortunately, open technology platforms have often come under scrutiny. There is a sense that no one is “responsible” for…

BitVM 2: Opening Up The Playing Field

Last October Robin Linus from Zerosync dropped a bit of a bomb in the form of BitVM. One of the longest running criticisms of Bitcoin is that it is not possible to make arbitrary programs to control how money is spent or locked. Bitcoin only has a very limited amount of programmability in its scripting language, and the primitives available are extremely constrained. You can check a signature, you can add a timelock to something, you can manipulate data in a few simple ways, but that’s it.

You can program a Bitcoin UTXO to require a signature check, a timelock verification, etc. But you cannot program it to unlock based on any arbitrary conditions. Robin’s insight with BitVM was that…

LATEST: Singapore Enforces Licensing for Crypto Custody and Related Services

Singapore is set to revolutionize its approach to digital finance by expanding the Payment Services Act to include token custody and a broader spectrum of financial transactions. This development, effective from April 4, 2024, as announced by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), is geared towards establishing Singapore as a leading hub for digital assets. The amendments aim to bolster investor protection and maintain financial stability by introducing rigorous requirements for digital payment token (DPT) service providers.

With an eye on competing with global financial centers like Hong Kong and Dubai, Singapore’s updated regulations mandate closer oversight of firms involved in the exchange and transfer of digital tokens. Entities affected by the new regulations must promptly comply by notifying MAS within 30 days and submitting a licensing application within six months. The move underscores Singapore’s commitment to fostering innovation in the digital asset space while ensuring stringent safeguards against money laundering and terrorism financing, marking a significant step in its regulatory evolution.

Q&A: What will the Bitcoin halving mean for Bitcoin L2s?

Bitcoin was developed to emulate the scarcity and finite nature of resources like gold, thereby ensuring a limited supply. Satoshi Nakamoto, the founder of Bitcoin, intended that the maximum currency supply would be capped at 21 million coins.

Every four years, the network cuts the reward for mining bitcoin transactions by 50% via a process known as the halving. This is meant to slow down the influx of new coins and preserve the currency’s scarcity over time. It also ensures that Bitcoin‘s total finite supply approaches the 21 million cap gradually and predictably.

Following the halving next month, the block reward will be reduced to 3.125 bitcoin (BTC).

Given that the Bitcoin…
