Wormhole execs depart Jump Trading to run protocol independently: Bloomberg

Jump Trading spun off cross-chain protocol Wormhole as an independent entity, according to a report from Bloomberg.

The report stated that senior staffers at Wormhole left Jump as part of the split, including CEO Saeed Badreg and COO Anthony Ramirez.

Jump Trading did not immediately return a request for comment.

Wormhole, back in 2022, was hacked for roughly $320 million in one of the largest DeFi hacks to date. A whopping 120,000 ETH was stolen at the time. Jump Crypto, the crypto arm of Jump Trading, stepped in to replace the funds.

Earlier this year, in February, Blockworks Research was able to track transactions that showed Jump Crypto recovering the funds stolen by the…

Nocturne brings private accounts to Ethereum

Nocturne, a protocol that enables private accounts on Ethereum, has launched its first version on mainnet.

The protocol is designed so that users are able to deposit or receive funds privately on what Vitalik Buterin calls stealth addresses.

This means that users can generate a secret spending and viewing key, which can then be used to create multiple meta-addresses that can be used to interact with other accounts.

These addresses are held within Nocturne smart contracts and are intended to be used to trade what the company refers to as ‘hot assets,’ or crypto assets that are not designed to be held.

According to Nocturne, its smart accounts will be compatible with DeFi…

SEC delays decision on Hashdex ETH ETF rule change

The US Securities and Exchange Commission has delayed a decision on Hashdex’s proposed ethereum ETF rule change.

The move, confirmed by a filing dated Nov. 15, comes just days after the regulator similarly delayed Hashdex’s bitcoin ETF proposal.

If the SEC were to approve the rule change, the ETF would allow investors to gain direct exposure to ether (ETH) as it would hold the actual cryptocurrency.

According to the SEC’s filing, the Commission now has until Jan. 1, 2024 to make a decision or “institute proceedings to determine whether to disapprove the proposed rule change.”

The delay is one of the handful expected this week, including SEC decisions on the Franklin…

Bitcoin (BTC) circled $36,000 after the Nov. 16 Wall Street open as analysis hoped for a deeper BTC price comedown.

Data from Cointelegraph Markets Pro and TradingView followed a retracement from intraday highs of $36,600.

Having failed to establish a breakout beyond 18-month highs during the week, Bitcoin was uninspiring for market participants, some of whom hoped to see a fresh correction to retest lower levels.

“Would be happy to see this latest rally complete the round trip back to $35k. Would be even happier to see a retest of $33k,” monitoring resource Material Indicators wrote in part of the day’s X…

ENS developers urge Unstoppable Domains to drop patents or face lawsuit

Founder and lead developer of Ethereum Name Service (ENS) Nick Johnson is urging blockchain domains company Unstoppable Domains to drop a recently awarded patent or face a lawsuit, according to an open letter shared on X (formerly Twitter).

In January, Unstoppable Domains was granted its first patent, US11558344, which claims that Braden River Pezeshki, Matthew Everett Gould and Bogdan Gusiev are the inventors of a technology that uses blockchain technology to determine domains. The patent request was filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office in 2021.

According to Johnson, the patent is “based entirely on innovations that ENS developed and contains no novel innovations…

How Did A Trio Pull Off A $10M Bank Fraud Using Crypto?

In a major crackdown, the FBI arrested three persons for allegedly orchestrating a complex $10 million bank fraud scheme.

U.S. Attorney Damian Williams and FBI Assistant Director James Smith announced the arrests of the three persons identified as Zhong Shi Gao, Naifeng Xu and Fei Jiang.

Highlighted was the sophisticated operation that involved manipulating bank transactions and laundering the stolen funds through foreign cryptocurrency exchanges.

The scheme, active from 2018 to 2022, allegedly involved recruiting individuals to open bank accounts, which were then used to transfer and fraudulently double funds.

The trio, along with others, would then file false reports claiming these…

Reimagining Web3 With Bitcoin

When the Web3 narrative got very popular in 2021, I was still in college and had only recently been introduced to blockchain technology, smart contracts, and decentralized applications. Like many at the time, I imagined that Ethereum or another highly performant smart contract blockchain would grow to become the base layer of the Internet. The other outcome in my mind was a “multi-chain” future where the Internet ran on multiple smart contract L1s. And Bitcoin, being a boring chain devoid of Turing completeness, had no role in Web3.

A few facts could have easily set the record straight if I were only aware of them at the time. Luckily, I was more cautious with my money than with my…

CeFi is making the DeFi jump. Will it work?

The centralized finance sector received less than 7% of crypto venture funds every month from July to October. This is a far cry from 2021, where it would receive greater than half of all venture capital, according to data compiled by FalconX.

As their share of venture funds stagnates, centralized exchanges are increasingly adopting features common to decentralized finance (DeFi). Industry watchers were split on whether CeFi’s pivot to DeFi stemmed from a need for liquidity or from real interest in DeFi technology.

David Lawant, head of research at crypto prime brokerage FalconX, said the firm’s data appears to show a decline over time in CeFi fundraising relative to DeFi. He…
