Peirce, Uyeda ‘disagree’ with SEC decision to deny Coinbase petition

US Securities and Exchange Commissioners Hester Peirce and Mark Uyeda responded to the US regulator’s decision to deny a rulemaking petition from Coinbase on Friday.

The two said that they disagreed with the decision, a contrast to the statement released by agency chair Gary Gensler that praised the decision.

“The Petition raises issues presented by new technologies and other innovations, and addressing these important issues is a core part of being a responsible regulator. Any exploration of these issues should include public roundtables, concept releases and requests for comment, which would afford us the opportunity to hear from a wide range of market participants and other…

Open Source Justice On Resolvr

I’m an attorney. As soon as I found Bitcoin I began thinking about how it would change the justice system, the rule of law, and the ways in which society resolves disputes. That was the topic of my first article for Bitcoin Magazine, which concluded with these words:

[W]hile Bitcoin will have a destabilizing effect on the civil justice system in the short-term as it continues to disintermediate the system’s financial linchpins, it is possible to leverage Bitcoin to replace this system with improved conflict resolution paradigms. Bitcoin can be the catalyst for better liability enforcement methods, but that’s not an inevitability. Bitcoin won’t just fix this. It will require…

Sports betting is crypto’s true killer app

Crypto is here for the middlemen. The industry is more than ready to replace these parasitic cogs with decentralized, transparent and secure alternatives.

But crypto’s killer app — the way that crypto will truly launch into the mainstream — hasn’t arrived yet.

Some of my favorite crypto thought leaders have said for years that the real killer app will be prediction markets, NFTs, tokenized real estate, metaverse, etc. The laundry list continues to grow. But I’m here to say right now that none of these are crypto’s killer app. While they are interesting speculative opportunities that offer diverse market exposure, these markets are not large enough to onboard the next…

Microsoft Bing AI chatbot gives misleading election info, data

A study from two Europe-based nonprofits has found that Microsoft’s artificial intelligence (AI) Bing chatbot, now rebranded as Copilot, produces misleading results on election information and misquotes its sources.

The study was released by AI Forensics and AlgorithmWatch on Dec. 15 and found that Bing’s AI chatbot gave wrong answers 30% of the time to basic questions regarding political elections in Germany and Switzerland. Inaccurate answers were on candidate information, polls, scandals, and voting.

It also produced inaccurate responses to questions about the 2024 presidential elections in the United States.

Bing’s AI chatbot was used in the study because it was one of the…

SEC denies Coinbase’s petition for rulemaking

The US Securities and Exchange Commission denied Coinbase’s 2022 petition for rulemaking on Friday.

The SEC opposes the petition’s view that using existing securities laws to enforce crypto regulation is “unworkable.”

“The Commission has discretion to determine the timing and priorities of its regulatory agenda, including with respect to discretionary rulemaking such as that requested in the Petition,” the SEC wrote.

Gary Gensler, Chair of the Commission, said that he agrees with the Commission’s denial.

“I disagree with the petition’s assertion that now is the right time for the regulatory action it suggests. The Commission and its staff are currently pursuing…
