Trump cites merchandise sales in apparent bitcoin U-turn

Former President Donald Trump says he is “not sure” if he would crack down on bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies after alleging that digital assets were a popular form of payment for his recently-launched sneaker collection.

“I noticed that so many of them were paid for with this, with the new currency,” Trump said of accepting crypto as payment for his new footwear launch during an interview Monday on CNBC’s “Squawk Box.”

“People were going crazy for these sneakers. You probably were, too. Everybody was. Every friend I have had called me for a pair of sneakers. And I noticed that so many of them were paid for with the new currency. It’s a new cryptocurrency. I…

Here’s what Trump said about the shoes in an interview on CNBC: “Sometimes we’ll let people pay through Bitcoin … it’s an additional form of currency”.

This statement was huge coming from the former president, who has said that Bitcoin is a disaster waiting to happen in 2021. His stance has changed since then. According to Trump, “Bitcoin has taken on a life of its own” and he “can live with it one way or the other.”

LATEST: Donald Trump Acknowledges Bitcoin as ‘Additional Form of Currency’

Donald Trump, former US President and current Republican candidate, admits to enjoying interactions with cryptocurrency but refrains from active trading. In a CNBC interview, Trump described cryptocurrency as having a life of its own and occasionally accepts bitcoin as payment, considering it an “additional form of currency.”

This represents a shift from his previous skepticism, where he once labeled cryptocurrency a “scam” in 2021. Despite past criticisms, Trump has ventured into the crypto space, selling nonfungible tokens (NFTs) like a trading card collection and a “Mugshot Edition” in December 2022. Arkham Intelligence reported a crypto portfolio, believed to be owned by Trump, selling 1,075 ETH in December, valued at $2.4 million.

Trump’s evolving stance mirrors a broader trend of increased recognition of cryptocurrencies’ significance, signaling a changing landscape in finance and politics.

America deserves a financial alternative — and it’s crypto

We live in an era of unprecedented surveillance, control and hidden costs imposed by intermediaries.

Big Tech companies control the information you see, while silencing voices their content moderators don’t agree with. Big Banks charge hidden fees on their users, while credit card companies charge fees on small businesses. And the federal government, every day, takes steps closer to a central bank digital currency, or CBDC, the ultimate step in financial surveillance and control.

The American people deserve an alternative.

And that alternative is already here today: Crypto, blockchain-based networks and the decentralized social media and financial services built on top of them….
