LATEST: 2023 Witnesses Over $1 Billion in Crypto Fund Inflows, Bitcoin Playing a Major Role

Digital asset manager CoinShares reports significant inflows into cryptocurrency funds, pushing yearly totals above $1 billion. Last week alone, crypto funds received $293 million, with Bitcoin funds contributing $240 million to this total. The recent surge is attributed to optimism regarding potential U.S. regulatory approval of a spot Bitcoin ETF. Bitcoin’s value has risen by 37% since October, with Bitcoin exchange-traded product volumes making up 19.5% of total Bitcoin trading volumes, indicating increased participation by ETP investors compared to previous years. This marks the third-highest yearly inflow on record, totaling $1.14 billion in 2023.

FTX Foundation staffer fights for $275K bonus promised by SBF

An employee of FTX’s charity wing recruited by FTX co-founder Sam Bankman-Fried is trying to get paid $275,000, the remainder of his claimed 2022 salary bonus.

Ross Rheingans-Yoo’s lawyers argued in a Nov. 13 court filing that only $375,000 of his $650,000 bonus was paid by FTX. They claim the remaining funds were owed when the crypto exchange filed for bankruptcy in November 2022.

Rheingans-Yoo’s latest filing comes in response to FTX’s objection filed on Oct. 30.

Elon Musk AI project inspired memecoin ‘Grok’ falls 74% on creator scam claim

The price of a memecoin drawing its namesake from Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence project “Grok” plummeted over 70% after blockchain sleuth ZachXBT alleged the token’s social media account was recycled from a scam token project.

In a Nov. 13 X (formerly Twitter) post, ZachXBT shared screenshots showing various social media accounts and websites tied to the Grok (GROK) token were repurposed from old projects — including an abandoned memecoin project called ANDY — which has significantly declined from its all-time high.

Not that people in this space will care but @GROKERC20 $GROK was created by a scammer.

XRP jumps then dumps on faked BlackRock XRP trust filing

A BlackRock filing suggesting the asset manager was creating an XRP (XRP) exchange-traded product caused a 12% spike in XRP, which it quickly lost after the filing was confirmed as fake.

The saga lasted an hour late on Nov. 14 as X (Twitter) users picked up on a Delaware filing showing BlackRock filed to register the “iShares XRP Trust” — a precursor to launching an exchange-traded fund (ETF).

XRP gained 12%, spiking to $0.73 within 30 minutes of the news of the filing. However, it lost all its gains in half an hour after it was confirmed a fake by Bloomberg ETF analyst Eric Balchunas, who spoke with BlackRock.

XRP price swings after fake BlackRock trust filing

A fake business registration for a BlackRock XRP trust fueled a market surge and subsequent fall.

The registration, still available on the website for Delaware’s Division of Corporations, mirrors past legitimate registrations by the asset management giant. It names BlackRock Advisors and Daniel Schweiger as registered agents.

BlackRock representatives have reportedly said that the filing is false, according to Bloomberg ETF analyst Eric Balchunas.

“Confirmed by BlackRock by me. Some whacko must have added using BlackRock executive name etc. Cmon man,” Balchunas wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Ripple (XRP’s) price soared as much as 10% on the news before falling. In the wake of…

First deadline window looms for SEC to approve Bitcoin ETFs: Law Decoded

The United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) could approve all 12 pending spot Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) applications by Nov. 17. Beginning on Nov. 9, the SEC reportedly has a “window” to approve all 12 spot Bitcoin ETF filings, including Grayscale Investments conversion of its Grayscale Bitcoin Trust product.

However, even if the SEC approves spot Bitcoin (BTC) ETFs by Nov. 17, it could be more than a month before the products launch. The expected delay in launch following SEC approval would be due to the two-step process of launching an ETF. For an issuer to start a Bitcoin ETF, it must get approval from the SEC’s Trading and Markets division on its 19b-4…

APEC finance ministers to share perspectives on crypto at meeting in San Francisco

The weeklong Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit began on Nov. 11 in San Francisco. The highlight of the event will surely be on the sidelines, when United States President Joe Biden and Chinese leader Xi Ping meet on Nov. 15, but with the focus of the organization being on the regional economy, the finance ministers’ meeting is also of primary importance.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said in her opening speech at the finance ministers’ meeting on Nov. 13 that they will discuss “priority areas [that] are oriented toward the long-term,” with a heavy emphasis on sustainability. They will also hold one session devoted to supply-side economics and another on…

Crypto advocacy group pushes back against proposed IRS rules on brokers

The Blockchain Association, a United States-based cryptocurrency advocacy group, has submitted a comment letter mainly in opposition to tax regulations proposed by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

In a Nov. 13 letter, the Blockchain Association (BA) said proposed IRS rules introduced in August aimed at regulating the sale and exchange of digital assets by brokers exceeded the government body’s authority and reflected “fundamental misunderstandings about the nature of digital assets and decentralized technology.” The U.S. Treasury Department released a draft of the proposed rules in August, attempting to address difficulties in reporting and paying taxes on crypto transactions.

Traders cool their jets as crypto ETF, FTX reboot optimism fades

Crypto prices took a turn into the red Monday, following an explosive week for many tokens. Industry analysts attribute the downturn to premature excitement over anticipated developments in the Web3 sector, compounded by the influence of key macroeconomic data.

Bitcoin has been able to sustain its recent rally, managing to stay above the $36,000 level Monday despite a mild selloff. Solana’s SOL token, one of the biggest winners in the altcoin market recently, faltered as well, losing more than 6% in 24 hours.

FTT, the native token of the now-bankrupt FTX exchange, faltered a bit over the weekend, posting a roughly 3.5% loss on Monday, but remains up more than 215% over the past…
