Block Inc has announced that Square will soon support bitcoin payments allowing merchants to accept bitcoin directly through Square hardware. The feature will debut at Bitcoin 2025 in Las Vegas where attendees can try it firsthand. Powered by the Lightning Network this upgrade enables fast low-cost transactions and will begin rolling out in late 2025 with full availability expected in 2026 pending regulatory approval.
This move expands on Square’s Bitcoin Conversions launched in 2024 which lets sellers convert part of their sales into bitcoin automatically. Now with native bitcoin support Square offers a seamless way for businesses to accept digital payments helping realize bitcoin’s original peer-to-peer vision. Paying with bitcoin will be simple for customers using a QR code at checkout with Square handling the exchange rates and confirmations behind the scenes.
Block is also strengthening its broader bitcoin ecosystem with products like Bitkey a self-custody wallet and Proto a suite of mining tools. These efforts aim to make bitcoin accessible secure and truly decentralized for everyone.
